Iron County Commission Assignments and Duties

This may also be found on the county website at ironcounty.net. A summary of the current commissioner assignments can be found here.

One Commissioner is the chairman and the chairmanship has traditionally rotated yearly. The Commission meets the 2nd and 4th Monday’s of each month.  There are 3 seats on the commission.  Seats A and B are up for election this year and Seat C is offset from the others by 2 years.  All seats have a four year term.

The County Commission is the Executive body of the county.  It is also a Legislative body that may approve policy and enact ordinances that govern the residents of the county.  And finally it is a Quasi-Judicial body that is empowered to hear and pass judgment on things such as appeals of decisions of various county boards.

In addition to the duties that Lois mentioned we also do the following:

  1. Monitor the Legislative session especially for bills that affect counties and travel to Salt Lake City to lobby the legislature.  Work closely with our State Senator and Representatives year round.
  2. Travel to Washington D.C. at least yearly to lobby the congressional delegation and work with their national, state and local staff constantly on many issues.  Work with a lobbyist in Washington D.C. on public land issues such as Payment in Lieu of Taxes and Secure Rural Schools funding that is essential for counties like Iron that have a large percentage of Federal Ownership.
  3. Attend Iron County Coordinating Council on a monthly basis to coordinate efforts with the municipalities in the county.
  4. Many and varied efforts toward delisting of the Prairie Dog which is the overall goal.  Most efforts however are targeted at the immediate need for “take” credits to accommodate development in areas inhabited by Prairie dogs. Some efforts that we are integrally involved with are: 1. Utah Prairie Dog Recovery Implementation Program (UPDRIP) 2. New Range-wide Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP).  The Prairie dog situation encompasses many, many meetings and consumes a great deal of our time in what many times turn out to be futile efforts because of the intricacies of the Endangered Species act and the lack of funds to acquire the mitigation habitat needed.  We work closely with Garfield and Wayne counties as the prairie dog ranges in all three areas.
  5. Work with Utah Association of Counties
  6. Coordinate efforts on many issues with neighboring counties.
  7. Work with National Association of Counties.
  8. Extensive travel to meetings and training seminars.
  9. Public appearances for community events, dedications, annual meetings of organizations, and etc.
  10. Nominate members of the Board of Directors of CICWCD.
  11. Nominate and approve members of approximately 20 county boards such as Planning Commission, Weed Board, Council on Aging, Board of Adjustments, Tax Appeal board, and etc.
  12. Work extensively with USFS, BLM, DWR, USFWS, SITLA, and all other government agencies on projects and policies of concern and to assure the county is treated fairly.
  13. Promote and support new opportunities for the county such as the proposed Veterans Nursing Home.
  14. etc. etc.
